Finally! It’s 2021 and 2020 is completely behind us. Today is the first day of a new beginning. And speaking of new beginnings, the original one is described in the first verses of the Book of Genesis in the Bible.
*What if Genesis 1 is an accurate account of Creation? Put aside everything else you’ve been taught or thought about it and let yourself consider this one, simple question: What if Genesis 1 is right? Here are 10 crucially important things we know if it is right:
First, we know that God and Creation are not one and the same thing because He existed before Creation. That means pantheism — Creation and God are identical — is ruled out as a credible explanation.
Second, we know that God declared the work of His hands good, so that leaves no room for a dualism that says there are two eternally equal principles of Good and Evil, or many gods.
Third, we know that human beings, male and female, are, uniquely, made in the image of God, which rules out people being merely the highest form of animal life and no more.
Fourth, we know that God speaks because He did so in Genesis, which means materialism — the idea that an impersonal material universe is all there is — cannot explain Creation.
Fifth, we know that the God of Creation is equally the God of everything in it, which eliminates tribal, racial or national conceptions of Him.
Sixth, we know the essential reality about God by His creation —He exists because He created it and sovereignly rules it according to His will and nothing else.
Seventh, we know Creation has a purpose, that God did not create it and then forget it. And we know the corollary here: Day and night continue, so His purpose in Creation has not yet been fully realized.
Eighth, we know we are accountable to God because He created us according to His will, not according to ours, so we should ask Him how we should live, and not decide it on our own.
Ninth, we know that we don’t know as much as God knows because we do not know everything about how He created us and everything else in His creation.
Finally, we know that He knows everything there is to know about His Creation, including why it is as it is, where it is headed and what our proper role, being made in His image, is as part of it. And because we don’t know all there is to know about it, thinking we have the answers is foolish pride, or worse, stubborn ignorance.
Think about these things, then ask yourself the most important question of them all: What does this mean for you and your life if Genesis 1 is right?
- A New Year’s Day Challenge: This meditation was inspired by the January 1 entry in Professor D.A. Carson’s “For the Love of God” daily devotional. It has been an essential part of my morning quiet times with the Lord every day for many years. If you are not a follower of Jesus Christ today, I believe you will be if you read this book and the Bible. Will you take this challenge? If you will, I will provide you with free copies of both books. Just email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
